Department of Public Works Part-time Position
Borough of Midland is seeking two seasonal part-time Department of Public Works employees, not to exceed 35 hours a week. The applicant would work under the direction of the Department of Public Works Foreman, to perform various tasks in the maintenance of parks, lawns, and public grounds/facilities. Such tasks include manual labor, operation of motorized equipment, public contact, equipment maintenance, building and grounds maintenance; and to do related work as required.
DUTIES:
Operates equipment such as large power mowers, pick-up trucks, and other equipment of comparable size and complexity, operates power chain saws, wood splitters, stump grinders, power trimmers, hand mowers, skill saws, drills, stump routers, air hammers, posthole diggers, small rollers, and related power equipment; performs grounds maintenance duties including tree and shrub planting and removal, pruning, stump removal, renovation, mowing, seeding, sowing and fertilizing; collects refuse; performs minor maintenance and repair work on buildings and recreational facilities; cleans buildings and assists in seasonal opening and closing of those facilities; performs heavy manual work such as digging ditches, mixing cement, concrete, cleaning trash grounds; assists skilled workers in capital improvement, major maintenance and repair projects; performs snow removal duties; performs minor equipment and tool repair; ensures that equipment is serviced with gas, oil, water and lubricants and that all preventive maintenance is completed; and prepares shelter reservations for users.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Must have high school diploma or G.E.D. and be able to read and write, including three years of experience in grounds maintenance, equipment operation or general labor. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of grounds, building and parks operation and maintenance; ability to organize work and direct the work of others; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, ability to operate various equipment as described above; ability to do minor repair and construction work on buildings, equipment and grounds, ability to get along with the public; ability to perform heavy labor such as felling trees and removing stumps. Knowledge and skill to operate heavy machinery preferred.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Applicant must hold a valid Pennsylvania class “C” driver's license prior to employment. Must be available to work anywhere within the Borough of Midland. This position requires a background investigation and drug test prior to appointment.
