This position will provide direct first-line supervision to approximately 10-15 craft employees and/or staff augmentation contractors responsible for the operation, maintenance, and construction of substation and transmission assets. Specific supervisory responsibilities will be in the areas of adherence to safe work practices, design and construction standards, and company policies; human performance; workforce productivity; timeliness of work completion; and employee development. The position will have responsibility for the execution and documentation of work to ensure compliance with OSHA, NERC, environmental and other regulations associated with the construction and maintenance of transmission assets. This position will also be responsible for building a collaborative work environment with all employees, addressing and resolving employee issues, and resolving conflict between employees.

Primary responsibility will be within a specific geographic area within the six state regulated service territory of Duke Energy, but as required work can also be elsewhere either within or outside of Duke's normal service territory. Voltage levels in the assets within the responsibility of this position are typically 44kV to 500kV. Large power equipment includes high voltage breakers and transformers ranging in value from $100,000 to $2,000,000 each. This position will have responsibility and accountability for timely execution of assigned work and adherence to capital and O&M budgets as defined for the supervised work group.

Project scopes may include:

  • Major substation and transmission line repairs or refurbishment projects including energized work for Transmission Projects, Transmission Maintenance, Company Generation Plants, and external customers
  • Restoration of system outages and response to equipment failures and emergencies.
  • Establishing and maintaining positive customer relations with internal and external customers
    This workgroup is "on call" 24/7 for supporting system emergencies/emergent projects. This position is responsible for fostering a culture that values self-reporting of compliance violations/errors/Human Performance events, continuous improvement, and consistency between each area of responsibility.

    Major Job Duties:

    Lead the team of craft performers to ensure reliable and quality service for transmission and distribution served customers and achieve process results:

  • Ensures assigned work is completed according to schedule, maintenance procedures, practices, and in compliance with design and construction standards
  • Ensures standard work processes are followed by team
  • Complete field reviews to observe safe work practices, progress, performance, quality and results
  • Monitors team results to identify opportunities for improvement
  • Initiates actions to ensure objectives are achieved and improvement opportunities are addressed
  • Ensures workgroup is appropriately staffed and supported for 24/7 operations, planned and emerging construction activities
  • This includes both individual availability and setting employee expectations
  • Maintains responsibility for O&M and capital expenditures to meet or exceed expectations of project budgets and resource estimates, providing timely projection updates and feedback when unavoidable variances occur or are predicted.
    Maintains productive and motivated work force to ensure a cohesive team effort:

  • Actively shares information with employees
  • Develop a culture of two way communication, encouraging employee feedback and providing communications to Manager of Transmission C&M Services
  • Enable employees to make decisions within boundaries of process and goals
  • Resolves employee issues such as corrective actions, IBEW contract admin. (where applicable), etc
  • Develop a culture which supports continuous employee development (training, career development, technical)
  • Provide individual employee feedback to ensure continuous improvement
  • Ensure safe working conditions and practices by providing adequate safety training of work practices and procedures
  • Perform safety observations of work performance by crew members
  • Initiate action to promptly correct potential or actual safety problems
  • Investigate team and individual questions or concerns responding in a timely manner
  • Communicate concerns to department management and others.
    Implement Continuous Improvement:

  • Serve as model of leadership for change
  • Analyze feedback to ensure appropriate actions are taken to positively impact results
  • Provide performance feedback to leadership for continuous improvement
  • Ensures implementation of organizational improvements and technology
    Serves as local contact for various company issues:

  • Support employees in other organizations who report locally
  • Serve as local contact for facilities, transportation, communications, etc.
  • Serve as local contact for Customer Services organization
  • Serves on peer-level or other department teams in support of company objectives
  • Supports peers in organization through sharing of best practices and learnings
  • Ensure that customer incidents are thoroughly investigated and reviewed with responsible employee

    Must be available to work on call-outs for emergency work 24/7.
    Must be able to travel within the Indiana service territory as assigned crews work all over the state.

    The successful candidate must reside or be willing to re-locate within 50 miles of the headquarters


    Basic Qualifications:
    High School Diploma and a minimum of 8 years of relevant Transmission, Distribution and/or other relevant work experience

    Desired Qualifications:
    Associate's (2-year) or higher degree in a directly-applicable field
    Demonstrated effective leadership roles or assignments
    Ability to lead and direct others in the day to day activity of maintaining and operating our transmission lines.
    Knowledge of transmission lines and the maintenance and operation of those lines.
    Experience with e-max used to plan, schedule, and document maintenance activities
    Proficient in the use of a personal computer for emails, outage requests, e-max, word, excel, power point, and other related software.
    Someone who leads by example and demonstrates good ethical values.
    An understanding of transmission line work from a safety perspective. The ability to make decisions some of which are required quickly in emergency situations.
    Experience with major transmission line inspection, repair and construction.
    Experience working with represented employees
    Experience trouble shooting, and resolving issues with a variety of electrical equipment.
