Position is located at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, 4801 La Crosse Ave, Austin, TX 78739. Work schedule is Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday 8-1:45 and Sunday from 8-5:15.

Additional Information Purpose

Assists the Horticulture Department in the daily operations and maintenance of the living collections, grounds, and growing operation through horticultural practices and volunteer management. Provides visitor assistance and ensures a positive visitor experience.

Essential Functions

Assists in the daily operations and maintenance specifically, but not limited to the Luci and Ian Family Garden: installation and care of plant materials, raking, weeding, mowing, watering, mulching, pruning, shaping, seed collection, bed preparation and construction, spot repair of decomposed granite paths, Integrated Pest Management, use of hand tools and light power equipment, basic irrigation operation, updating of plant identification, removal of garden debris including litter, branches, and animal scat Trains, supervises, and works with regular volunteers and community service volunteers. Effectively coordinates and communicates with members of the horticulture staff and all other departments. Assists the public in answering questions related to the Wildflower Center and horticulture, and strives to ensure positive visitor experiences. Participate in education and mission related activities such as volunteer training, docent training and enrichments, site tours, festivals, and special events. Perform associated administrative duties.

Marginal/Incidental functions

Work schedule is Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday. Occasional evenings for mission related events. Must be able to work independently and unsupervised on scheduled weekends. Drive UT vehicle.

Licenses: Class "C" Operator's Driver's License. Applicant selected must provide a current three year Driving Record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver's License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident.

Required qualifications

One year of experience in the care of plants, flowers, shrubs, trees and lawns. Have knowledge of horticultural techniques, plant materials and pathologies. Work well with and supervise diverse groups of people, be well organized, detail oriented, able to set priorities, take direction well from supervisor, and have excellent communication skills. Class C Operator's Driver's License. Applicant selected must provide a current three year Driving Record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver's License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident. Attention to safety is essential. Basic computer skills with MS Word, Excel, and email required. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Associates or Bachelors degree in horticulture or related field preferred. More than one year of experience with plant care. Extensive knowledge of Texas native plants or ecological systems. Skills in the safe and effective use of power equipment including chain saws, tractors, weed eaters, and lawn mowers. Experience gardening with children. Experience as a volunteer or supervising volunteers. Skill and willingness to make public presentations and conduct media interviews. Current Pest Control Applicators License. First Aid/CPR/AED certification. Spanish language skills.

A criminal history background check will be required for finalist(s) under consideration for this position.

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas ( TRS ), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
