Under the general supervision of the Associate Director of Facilities Services & Operations and the daily work direction of a facilities lead, the Facilities Worker II is responsible for performing a range of semiskilled and basic skilled facilities and systems maintenance, repair and renovation work. The Facility Worker II will be responsible for analyzing and troubleshooting problems across multiple trade functions; and performing necessary repairs independently.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Installs faucets, flush valves and other basic plumbing devices; running DWV piping, soldering pipe and clearing drains; installs outlets and switches; replaces ballasts and fixtures (non-energized systems); pulls wire; installs and adjusts door hardware; installs Venetian blinds and fasteners; builds basic formwork; installs and replaces windows; sands, patches, masks and cleans-up; sets and pours concrete; performs basic painting; performs skilled laborer work; and performs routine mechanical maintenance.
  2. Assists or works independently in the installation of facility and systems materials, fixtures and mechanical equipment; electrical work; maintenance and repair of electrical lines and fixtures; the installation, maintenance and repair of plumbing and HVAC systems; facilities renovations and new construction; painting buildings and equipment.
  3. Participates in construction site/remodel tear down and set up; make simple interior and exterior repairs; make standard furniture and carpet repairs; and perform related facilities and systems support functions.
  4. Responds to daily service calls within the prescribed timeline; performs routine preventive maintenance functions for facilities and systems; set-ups jobs and performs the manual labor preparation; clean, maintain and repair fixtures, equipment and appliances.
  5. Maintains a safe and clean work environment, to include assigned tools, equipment, and vehicle in good working order; performs all work in accordance with established safety procedures. Maintains records and retrieves data related to work performed using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems; enters equipment and service information into computer maintenance management system. Prepares standard reports; and consults and works with other trades workers.

Other Functions:

  • Communicates through computer e-mail, central computer calendar system, telephone voice mail systems, and two way radio systems.
  • Works under the direction of a skilled crafts worker on the more complex, trade-related assignments.
  • Performs other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge Work requires working knowledge of the common terminology, methods, practices, tools and procedures related to building and facilities services, maintenance and repair and/or a base knowledge of a building/construction or mechanical trade.

Abilities - Must be able to perform proficiently a variety of semi-skilled facilities maintenance and repair tasks; operate all applicable tools, equipment and systems; follow standard written instructions and procedures; read and write at a level appropriate to the position; perform simple arithmetic calculations as required by the position; and demonstrate the ability to learn maintenance and repair functions. All positions require the performance of strenuous manual labor.

Minimum Qualifications

These abilities normally would be acquired through any combination of experience and training equivalent to six months of experience as a trades assistant or laborer, or six months of hands-on experience in general facilities and systems maintenance and repair work

Required/Specialized SkillsPreferred Qualifications

Must possess and maintain a valid license to drive in the State of California, pass the Defensive Training Class, and be insurable under the Universitys liability coverage.

  • Due to the nature of the work, this position requires the ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, on a regular basis.

  • WORK ENVIRONMENT:


    Required to work indoors and outdoors in University buildings and grounds year-round, including inclement weather. May include working in the presence of loud noise, vibration, dark and/or confined spaces, moving mechanical parts, automobile exhaust, dust, chemical, and paint fumes. Required to work in high, precarious places. Work may involve the risk of being exposed to fire and electrical shock. Position required full range of motion, and a variety of movements necessary to perform strenuous manual labor, including but not limited to lifting and moving moderate sized equipment up to 10 to 50 pounds (moving up to 100 pounds is required rarely). Position requires bending, climbing, reaching, moving heavy objects and equipment, and applying force. Standard vision requirements with/without corrective aides: Close (clear vision at 20 inches or less); Distance (clear vision at 20 feet or more); Color (ability to identify and distinguish colors); Peripheral; Depth Perception; Ability to adjust focus. Requires travel between campus offices and off-campus locations.
