Description: The New Jersey Department of Transportation is accepting applications for candidates interested in Construction and Maintenance Technician 5 positions.

Construction and Maintenance Technician 5 employees are assigned a 40 - hour work week. Benefits include medical/dental and pension. The starting salary range is $32,806 - $38,181.

Region North consists of Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Morris, Passaic, Sussex, Union and Warren Counties. The Division of Construction and Materials in Region North is comprised of two sections: Construction and Materials. Construction is responsible for assuring that the contractor constructs the project in accordance with the plans and specifications, and Materials is responsible for assuring that the materials being supplied and used on all the projects are tested and inspected.

A Construction and Maintenance Technician 5 may be assigned to either of the two sections at any time. The technician's work location will be at any NJDOT project within the boundaries of Region North or the regional office at Mt. Arlington, NJ.

Position Description: Performs physical testing of construction materials including asphalt, concrete, aggregates, steel, and/or testing of electrical items.

Performs calibration and routine maintenance on testing equipment.

Performs basic mathematical calculations to determine test results, dimensions and/or elevations and reads plans and specifications.

Field assignment work days are 8 hours in length. Standard work hours are 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., but are subject to change based on contractor need. Such hours may include nights, weekends, and holidays depending on the contractor and the project assignment. It should be noted that the hours set by the contractor may differ from day to day, but every effort is made to provide advance notice in cases of shift change. Work assignment locations may also vary frequently based on the contractor and project assignment and includes all areas within the boundaries of the region. Appointees must also be available to work overtime, if and when required.

A technician is required to use their personal vehicle to get to the jobsite or supplier's plant and if necessary to transport test specimens. Appointees are eligible for mileage reimbursement. A "standard commute" deduction of 32 miles for a daily round - trip commute is first applied. Appointees living outside the region of assignment are eligible for mileage reimbursement within the region of assignment only after the "standard commute" deduction is applied from the region boundary. Mileage reimbursement is not applicable when reporting to the official workstation.

Requirements: One (1) year of experience in the inspection or testing of materials, reviewing permit applications, inspecting construction work, and/or construction/maintenance work requiring mathematical calculations to estimate materials or labor needed or used.

NOTE: Applicants who do not possess the required experience may substitute college semester hour credits in engineering or engineering technology program on the basis of thirty (30) semester hour credits being equal to one (1) year of experience.
